Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

When I read the summary for Reboot I was pretty sure that I would like it.  But, I had no idea that I would love this book as much as I did, this is easily one of my favorites so far this year.  This story is so engrossing that once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down until the very last page.

Five years ago at twelve years old, Wren Connolly was shot to death.  178 minutes later, she came back as a Reboot. Reboots are stronger, faster, more dangerous, and the only way that they can be killed is to destroy the brain.  The longer a reboot is dead the more likely that they won’t have any human emotions left once they come back.  At 178 minutes, Wren is the reboot that everyone else fears.  She follows orders, doesn’t ask questions and she never lets anyone get too close.

At the beginning of this book, Wren seems very cold and emotionless.  But as the story goes on we see that she is mostly trying to convince herself and everyone around her that she has no ‘human’ feelings at all since that is what everyone expects.  She is very convincing until the newbie’s come and Wren meets Callum.

Callum was only dead for 22 minutes before he rebooted, so he still has a lot of human traits and emotions.  Wren isn’t really sure what to think of Callum, because he makes her feel all kinds of things that she thought weren’t possible.

I really liked Callum.  He doesn’t seem very strong physically, but he is strong in other ways. I appreciated how he stood up for what he thought was right, regardless of the consequences.  I also think he was exactly what Wren needed in order to understand what the HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation) was doing to humans and reboots wasn’t right.

Overall, Reboot was action packed and utterly compelling.  There was never a dull moment and not once did my mind wander.  I have to say that the next book in this series can’t come out fast enough and it is at the top of my wishlist. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Callum and Wren.

  1. Reboot's synopsis also captured my attention, but I'm a little wary because of this other review I had seen talking about a lot of points I knew I would dislike.

But on the other hand, did you know there's an animated cover for this?
